Chocolate Day: Is Valentine's Week as 'festival of love' distorting our culture by turning it into commercial event?
"The journey of modern Valentine's Day has been that of a transition from a religious to cultural to romantic to commercial to sensual gratifications. Currently, it is being controlled by the market forces via sensual gratifications to sell their wares by dubbing it as a 'week of love'," complained my neighbour, who subscribes for a certain ideology.
Meanwhile, the neighbour's grandson, 9, who is studying in an English medium school, came and wished me "Happy Chocolate Day!" and demanded the sweet. When asked, how did he know about the celebration, he replied that in the school 'bhaiyas and didis' were talking about it and there was a leaflet about it in the newspaper with glossy pictures of chocolates being shared by two lovers.

"See, how the schools are producing little un-analytical adults and copy-cats. They too have made education a commodity for profit making through a factory model of schooling. My grandson does not listen to me anymore and demands chocolates and cocas whenever, I take him out," he said while criticising the neglect of right kind of development of children at home and schools.

He added that in our country, the Valentine's Week is an event of alien culture and out-and-out commercial celebration which is targeting the consumers of all ages across the world despite not being a public holiday in any country.

My neighbour had an interesting point to make. I had read somewhere that all market researchers are pseudo-researchers who will popularise something by distributing free to get people addicted and then conclude 'chocolate is the most loved and most delicious desert' on the earth.

Market research can be summed up by giving a thought to the quote by comedian James Corden, "Look at bread and see it as a chocolate bar, and say to yourself, 'Ok, you don't need that'. Bread is bad."
