Commonwealth Games 2018: Mirabai Chanu wins first gold for India in weightlifting
Indian weightlifter from the Northeastern state of Manipur made the country proud by winning the first gold medal for India at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Australia.

On Thursday, at the 21st edition of the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, Chanu bagged the first gold medal for India in the women's 48 kilograms category.

Leaving the competition far behind, Chanu registered 86 kg in snatch and 110 kg in clean and jerk for a total of 196 kg. She was followed by Marie Hanitra of Mauritius who finished second with 170 kg and Dinusha Gomes of Sri Lanka who came third with 155 kg.

Chanu started on a positive note by breaking the existing Commonwealth Games record of 80 kg and later moved on to better that record by successful lifts of 84 kg and 86 kg, the latter being her new personal best. At the end of the snatch session she had already extended a lead of 10 kilograms over her nearest rival Hanitra.

The Indian star weightlifter started the clean and jerk session in a similar fashion by lifting 103 kg in the first attempt. Clearly dominating over competition, the Manipuri finished her performance with a personal best lift of 110 kg in her third and final attempt, winning gold for her country.
