Odisha – a peace-loving state is now hugging headline for violence, particularly for heinous crimes like rape and murder during Bijua Janata Dal (BJD) rule under Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

As per the report of the Home Department, as many as 2011 rape cases - in average five to six cases on a day had been reported in year 2014. Rape cases have been increased by 10 percent in comparison to incidents reported in 2013.

Former Deputy Speaker and BJP leader Ram Chandra Panda while expressing concern said that actual situation was more serious than what had been presented in the report of the Home Department.

Similarly, 1450 murder cases had been registered at an average of four persons being killed on a day. "Police stations under Biju Janata Dal government is no more a shelter for citizens rather an umbrella for the anti-social elements," rued Panda while discussing on safety and security of law abiding people.

A total number of 93,657 cases of crime had been registered in 2014 whereas 90,184 cases were reported in 2103. On an average, there has been a rise of 4 percent in comparison to previous year.

Panda also held Chief Minister for such a deteriorating law and order situation in the state saying "Naveen Patnaik has failed in accessing the situation and taking correcting measures. Hence, he is accountable as he has kept the Home Portfolio since he came to power in 2000."
