Former Member of Parliament and Speaker Somnath Chatterjee passes away at 89, leaders condole death
Former Member of Parliament and Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee breathed his last at age 89 on the morning of 13th of August 2018. He died of heart attack at a private hospital in Kolkata.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the passing away of Chatterjee and said, “Former MP and Speaker Shri Somnath Chatterjee was a stalwart of Indian politics. He made our Parliamentary democracy richer and was a strong voice for the well-being of the poor and vulnerable. Anguished by his demise. My thoughts are with his family and supporters."

Congress President Rahul Gandhi (@RahulGandhi) tweeted, "I mourn the passing away of Shri Somnath Chatterjee, 10 term MP and former Speaker of the Lok Sabha. He was an institution. Greatly respected and admired by all parliamentarians, across party lines. My condolences to his family at this time of grief. #SomnathChatterjee"

Somnath Chatterjee (1929 – 2018) was mostly associated with the Communist Party of India (Marxist), but in the last decade of his life, he became an independent candidate. He served as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 2004 to 2009.

Reports are that Chatterjee's family has refused to take his mortal remains to CPI(M) HQ in Kolkata and even the CPI(M) flag on his body. It may be recalled that was expelled from CPI(M) on 23 July 2008 for violation of party discipline.
