Happy Ugadi: Learn two exclusive recipes for the occasion
Ugadi is being celebrated as the New Year's Day by people of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka as per the lunisolar Hindu calendar. It is considered as the most auspicious day for Telugus and Kannadigas.

In northern India, some sections of society are promoting the celebration of Vikram Samvat or Bhartiya Nav Varsh on this day. However, the celebrations and the holiday is mostly prevalent in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra and is known be different names.

My mother-in-law (MIL) was from Karnataka and father-in-law from UP who lived in Jaipur. Though they have passed away but I still remember that the two things MIL made on Ugadi were Puran Poli (more popular in Maharashtra) and Bevu Bella which is specially made on Ugadi, and hence, also called Ugadi Pachadi.

Puran Poli is a buttery roti or flatbread stuffed with jaggery, yellow softened gram dal and cardamom powder and served with some light and thin hot sugar syrup called gulawani. However, for Ugadi festival day, Bevu Bella is prepared and served as Prasadam also.

For preparing Bevu Bella, soak tamarind in hot water for about 15 minutes to have thick and watery medium. Thereafter, add grated jaggery or gur into the pulp to make it get dissolved completely. Lastly, add all the remaining ingredients such as neem flowers, salt, a pinch of chilli powder, chopped banana and mango pieces. Shake the mixture well. The recipe is ready to be served.
