Indian hockey team beats Ireland 3-2 in Rio to score first win in Olympics in 12 years
History was made in Rio Olympics as the Indian hockey team won their first match after 12 years. In a Group B match at the Olympic Hockey Centre in Rio de Janeiro, India beat Ireland 3-2.

With two strikes, Rupinder Pal Singh emerged as the leading goalscorer in the match that was mostly dominated by India.

VR Raghunath scored the third goal for India. The lone goal scorer for the Irish was John Jermyn. All goals in the match came through penalty corners.

This victory broke the Indian hockey team's jinx of going winless in the Olympics for 12 years. India's last win had come in the Athens Olympics in 2004 against South Korea. India had beaten them 5-2 in the 7th place play-off.

For the first time in Olympics history the field hockey games have been divided into four quarters of 15 minutes each instead of two halves of 35 minutes each.

The first half was mostly dominated by India with a higher percentage of ball possession. As soon as Raghunath flicked the ball into the net in the final minute of the first quarter the whole arena erupted with the chants of "India...India!"

Then, in the 27th minute, Rupinder Singh struck his first Olympics goal. His next goal came in the fourth and final quarter.

However, India did lose grip of the match in the middle allowing Ireland to claw back into the game from a score of 3-1 to 3-2.

India need two wins to make it to the quarterfinals but they have to face dangerous sides like Netherlands and Germany in their group. The other teams in Group B are Argentina and Canada.

India's next match is against Germany on Monday. In men's Olympic hockey, India is by far the most successful country having won 8 gold medals. But, the team has failed to reach the podium after the 1980 Moscow Olympics.
