Ramadan Kareem: The Islamic holy month of mercy and blessing is here
The blessed month of Ramadan is around - the time for the devout to empty the stomach to feed the soul. The month is meant to mark the revelation the Holy Qur'an and guide the followers to discern right and wrong.

The month is marked by fasting, self-restraint and praying for self-purification, which are obligatory for all Muslims during Ramadan. This is viewed as one of five pillars of Islam with the underlying message of the observance as "Allah is with those who restrain themselves."

Common greetings during Ramadan are "Ramadan Mubarak" or "Ramadan Kareem", which are the words to wish the followers a blessed or generous Ramadan.

Being the celebration of the descent of the word of God, the Qur'an, from the other world to the Earth, in its true essence, the observance signifies the importance of self-purification by practicing consciously and deeply the abstention from baser human desires through fasting.

It is expected of the followers not to treat the process of fasting as a ritual but carry out one-month long devotional exercise to purify their mind through spiritual reflection and self-introspection.

Thus, it is the month to acquire humility and humaneness through fasting, self-reflection and exalting the Almighty. In other words, the month of Ramadan needs to be lived as a holy month to realise the purity within in light of Islamic principles and guidance to lead an ethical life.

Here is my ABC verse to describe Ramadan

A: Abstinence from food, drink, and other physical needs as a complete fast during the daylight hours

B: Beaconing attention on the Almighty through prayers and self-sacrifice

C: Commitment to good thoughts, words and actions along with re-focusing one's self on the worship of God.

D: Developing an attitude of self-restraint and not falling prey to evil forces

E: Evolving by cleansing the body, feelings and soul from impurities
